US women’s basketball team denies France first gold in dramatic final – NBC New York

The final event of the Paris Games was a history-making performance by the U.S. women’s basketball team.

The Americans fought back from behind and won another gold medal against France at the end of the 2024 Olympic Games.

In a game in which both teams led in points at different times, the USA’s victory prevented France from winning its first gold medal in basketball, while also making the US women’s team the first ever in any sport to win eight consecutive Olympic titles.

In a dramatic final, the US women’s basketball team will take home gold after a 67-66 win over France.

It was a thrilling finale after France came from behind in the first quarter and fought tooth and nail to win a medal on their home court. But the Americans applied pressure and A’ja Wilson played an inspiring final two quarters.

France took a timeout in the final 17 seconds after the United States took a narrow 63-59 lead after Wilson made one of two free throws.

In the end, it came down to free throws after both the French and Americans were forced to the line by fouls on both sides. Kahleah Copper put the Americans ahead in the final seconds of the game, a lead that France could not overcome.

A dramatic throw with the final whistle brought the French only two points, leaving them just one point away from equalising.

The gold medal win not only secured a historic victory for the women’s team, but also tied China for the country’s gold medal count. The USA and China finished the games with 39 gold medals each.

A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart of the US team shared their excitement for the women’s basketball final at the Paris Games, looking for their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

The U.S. team entered the competition in Paris without having lost a single Olympic event since the 1992 Barcelona Games, and head coach Cheryl Reeve’s squad has shown no real signs of potential disappointment in its bid to win its eighth consecutive gold medal.

Powered by two-time WNBA MVPs A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart, the U.S. team has won its five games by an average margin of 18.6 points. The Americans’ closest games were a 13-point win over Belgium in the group stage and a 14-point victory over Nigeria in the quarterfinals.

France’s only other appearance in a women’s Olympic final came at the 2012 London Games, where the Americans built a 36-point lead. So will Team USA easily win a record title? Or will the French end the 2024 Games with a significant upset and gold on home soil?
