US Postal Service announces new stamp designs

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on Monday unveiled two new stamp designs that will go into circulation next month, one celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, while the other is dedicated to the African-American holiday of Kwanzaa.

The new stamps are part of the USPS Forever series, meaning their price will always be the same as the current price for First-Class Mail 1-ounce stamps. When released in September, the two stamps will be available for a single price of 73 cents.

The Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stamps are issued before the celebrations for those two holidays begin. The Hanukkah stamp will be released on September 1 in Washington, DC, while the Kwanzaa stamp will be released on September 15 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“With the issuance of this new stamp, the Postal Service celebrates the joyous holiday of Hanukkah with an enchanting image of a hanukkiah, the nine-branched menorah used during the holiday,” the USPS wrote in the stamp’s description. The stamp features a white, illuminated hanukkiah on a light blue background.

Hanukkah is celebrated between December 25 and January 2, 2025.

The Kwanzaa stamp features two black women and a black man dancing on a red and green background. The Kwanzaa holiday, created in 1966 by activist Maulana Karenga, encompasses harvest festival traditions from across the African continent and celebrates African-American culture.

“The holiday revolves around the seven core principles of the holiday – unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), shared work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), determination (nia), creativity (kuumba) and faith (imani) – and highlights the rich heritage and aspirations of the African American community,” the USPS wrote.

A total of 19 new stamps are planned for 2024, of which 15 have already been issued. These include a stamp dedicated to Betty Ford, wife of 38th President Gerald R. Ford and First Lady from 1974 to 1977; one dedicated to the bluegrass musical style; two stamps commemorating the historic photographs taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope; and one honoring civil rights pioneer Constance Baker Motley.

After the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stamps, only two more will be issued before the end of the year. One of them is entitled “Thank You, Healthcare Community” and will be issued on October 1 in Washington, DC. The stamp from the Forever series is dedicated to the sacrifices and dedication of US healthcare workers. The healthcare sector employs nearly 16 million people in the US, 80 percent of whom are women.

The other, “Winter Whimsy,” is a stamp featuring four different snowflake designs on navy blue, teal, tan or dark blue-green backgrounds. It will be issued without a ceremonial event on October 10 in Park City, Utah.

“The designs not only evoke snowflakes, but also a favorite seasonal craft – the fun activity of cutting folded paper with scissors and then opening it to reveal a delicate, symmetrical design,” USPS wrote in the stamp’s description. “The stamps’ lacy designs can evoke memories of fun schoolroom crafts. They can also evoke vivid outdoor adventures and the natural beauty of winter.”

The “Winter Whimsy” stamps are also part of the “Forever” series and are issued in booklets of 20 stamps each.
