Emma Navarro has done it again.

Navarro held on late Sunday afternoon, taking advantage of Coco Gauff’s weak spell to defeat the reigning US Open champion at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Navarro defeated Gauff 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in their fourth-round match to book a place in the quarterfinals for the first time in her career, which also matches her best result at a Grand Slam.

“It’s pretty crazy. I’ve lost in the first round the last two years and now to be in the quarterfinals is pretty crazy,” Navarro said on court after her win. “This is the city I was born in and it’s such a special feeling to play here.”

“Coco is an incredible player and I have a lot of respect for her. I know she’ll come back here and win this thing again one year.”

After Gauff held out early in the match, Navarro took the lead with a dominant first set win to secure the lead. After a series of double faults from Gauff, Navarro took a 4-2 lead in the first set before closing out the first set 6-3.

Navarro continued to hold strong at the start of the second set, taking a 4-3 lead after winning three consecutive points and earning the break that put her on the brink of a place in the quarterfinals.

But Gauff finally came to life. She leveled the set after Navarro lost it with a double fault and then won 12 of 15 points to level the match and force a third set.

However, Navarro broke early in the final set after Gauff conceded her 12th double fault of the afternoon. Gauff made three double faults in the last four points of the third game and immediately fell behind 3-1. Gauff’s problems continued as she tried to fight back and she conceded three more double faults as Navarro moved ahead 4-3 in the final set. From there, Navarro quickly closed out the rest of the match, claiming the win and reaching her second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Gauff made 19 double faults in the match, including 11 in the final set. She also made 60 unforced errors.

Navarro eliminated Gauff in the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this summer, but in London she was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Italian Jasmine Paolini.

Gauff had to pull herself together to face Navarro on Sunday. She stormed back to beat Elina Svitolina after dropping 11 straight points in the first set of their match on Friday. Her victory there was her 12th match win at a Grand Slam after losing an opening set since her debut in 2019, and her 60th win in a major match before her 21st birthday, something only five other Americans have accomplished.

Navarro will now face Spain’s Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals. Badosa defeated China’s Yafan Wang 6-1, 6-2 in their fourth-round match on Sunday.
