Draper is part of a wide open draw, with both Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Novak Djkovic suffering surprise exits. His form at the US Open has been impressive so far – winning his first three matches without dropping a set.

World number one Iga Swiatek resumes her quest for a second US Open title when she faces Liudmila Samsonova before men’s number one seed Jannik Sinner faces Tommy Paul.

Emma Raducanu was eliminated by Sofia Kenin on the Grandstand Court with 6:1, 3:6 and 6:4.

It looked like it might be a short outing as Kenin fought through the first set, but Raducanu denied him and took it to three sets.

A costly service game midway through the deciding set proved costly as the former champion headed the ball home.

Having played just one tournament since Wimbledon and skipped the Olympics to concentrate on her preparations for the US Open, she will be deeply disappointed if she falls at the first hurdle and questions remain about the future of her career.
