US Open 2024: Jack Draper storms past Tomas Machac and reaches the quarterfinals

Jack Draper put in a brilliant performance, reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open with a straight-set win over Tomas Machac.

The Briton stormed to a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 victory in just one hour and 44 minutes, securing his place in the last eight of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Czech Machac had won the three previous matches between the two, but after a strong start he was outclassed by a highly focused Draper at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Draper, seeded 25th, will face the winner of the all-Australian clash between 10th seed Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson in the next round.

“Today I played at a decent level,” said Draper.

“He was maybe a little bit off his best but I had to stay strong in the points. I lost here in the same round last year so it’s nice to come back and do better.”

The 22-year-old is the first Briton since Andy Murray in 2016 to reach the quarterfinals of the men’s singles at Flushing Meadows.

Although a number of big names, most notably Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, suffered early exits, Draper has yet to drop a set throughout the tournament and has every reason to believe he can make it to the end.

This was an impressive performance in a year that marked the breakthrough for the 1.93 m tall left-hander. This year he won the ATP title in Stuttgart and defeated Wimbledon champion Alcaraz in the Queen’s tennis tournament.
