Urgent search for suspect following shooting in Laurel County

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – UPDATE: London Mayor Randall Weddle says five people were shot and all are in stable condition after a shooting on I-75 near Exit 49 in Laurel County.

Three of the victims were flown out of St. Joseph’s Hospital in London for treatment.

The motorway is now open again after being closed for hours.

KY 909 and US 25 in Laurel County are both still closed.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office says police are looking for Joseph A. Couch, 32, as a person of interest in the shooting. The Sheriff’s Office says he is considered armed and dangerous.

Mayor Weddle said authorities are searching for Couch in a rural part of Laurel County and are confident he will be caught soon.

The Lexington Police Department is assisting in the search with its helicopter.

Officials would like to reassure citizens that they are safe this evening due to the numerous police departments in the area.

However, they remind people to remain vigilant and stay at home.

Anyone currently in the area is asked to follow police, fire service instructions and traffic signs for the remaining diversions.
