Updated 04.08.2024 13:00

Dear Eckerd Community,

University operations continue as normal. The Emergency Management Leadership Team continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby. Meteorologists are forecasting potentially strong winds, heavy rainfall, isolated tornadoes and hazardous marine conditions that could lead to power outages and flooding throughout the region.

Please do not drive on flooded roads. Keep your phone charged for tornado warnings and alerts, and be prepared to seek shelter in a windowless interior space in the event of a tornado warning.

As part of the emergency notification system, the college uses an outdoor siren to alert people on campus to seek shelter from an impending danger, such as a tornado. The siren is not designed to be heard inside buildings. The siren is always accompanied by a text message and email with details.

Students

  • Be careful when crossing campus. If you hear the siren, go inside immediately.
  • On campus, Campus Safety and Residence Life Counselors are available to answer any additional questions students may have. The Campus Safety phone number is 727-864-8260.
  • For those traveling to campus this week for move-in, Student Life will provide additional information after the storm passes through our area. If you have specific questions about traveling to campus, please email [email protected].

Employees

  • Employees who feel it is unsafe to travel to campus on Monday should speak with their supervisors to determine if they can work from home. Note that the Sunshine Skyway Bridge may be closed due to high winds. Bridge closures can be monitored at fl511.com.
  • If you are unable to work on campus or from home due to storm-related reasons, you should record the time on your timesheet or absence report as vacation or personal leave.

Stay informed by checking Pinellas County emergency information and the National Hurricane Center for regular storm updates.

Any updates or changes to college operations will be communicated through the emergency notification system and posted on eckerd.edu/tropical.
