Unusually heavy rain of over 6 inches hits Michigan; see last week’s rain

Most of us have had some helpful rain over the past few days. However, one particular location has received much more rain than it needed. Here’s a look at how much rain has fallen across Michigan.

The following images show radar estimated rainfall totals from yesterday and last week. The images are created by Precip AI, a team that combines radar data with actual rain gauges to create a more accurate picture of rainfall amounts.

A few things stand out when you look at yesterday’s precipitation and the last few days. Most of us had some helpful rain. However, you’ll notice that parts of the Thumb didn’t get much rain yesterday. You’ll also notice the bright red colors of very heavy rain over western Michigan.

A closer look at west central Michigan shows that the Muskegon area received between three and six inches of rain just yesterday. The official rain gauge in Muskegon recorded a total rainfall of 4.43 inches. This rainfall amount was the second highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded in Muskegon. The heaviest 24-hour rainfall in Muskegon was 5.08 inches on June 27, 1921. Reliable weather data for Muskegon dates back to 1896.

The Precip AI team zoomed in and found very high rainfall amounts of 6.47 inches around Whitehall, north of Muskegon. Emergency managers have reported that some roads were flooded in the area with extremely heavy rainfall.

There was an unconfirmed report of 9.8 inches of rain in Fruitland Township. The exact data from Precip AI seems to contradict that report. I would agree, as 10 inches of rain would have caused extreme flooding.

We’ve had several days of heavy rain showers. The image below gives us an overview of how much rain has fallen over the last week.

All of Lower Michigan had measurable precipitation this past week. Maps show that most of us had at least 4.5 inches of rain. Many areas received 1 to 2 inches of rain. Of course, there is also the area of very heavy rain in western Lower Michigan, where between 3 and over 6 inches of rain fell.

We really needed the rain. We’ll have to wait until early next week for another chance of rain, unless the remnants of Hurricane Helene move into southern Michigan over the weekend.
