UNLV and the school’s NIL collective have responded to the departure of quarterback Matthew Sluka amid allegations that Sluka did not receive the NIL money he was allegedly promised.

Sluka transferred from Holy Cross to the Rebels ahead of the 2024 season. However, he announced Tuesday night that despite an undefeated start to the year, he would use his redshirt year and leave the program due to “unconfirmed commitments.”

Marcus Cromartie, Sluka’s agent at Equity Sports, and the quarterback’s father, Bob, claim that UNLV did not honor its end of a $100,000 verbal offer for Sluka to transfer from Holy Cross to UNLV.

Blueprint Sports and Entertainment, UNLV’s NIL collective, issued a statement denying the Sluka family’s allegations.

“No formal NIL offers were made during Mr. Sluka’s recruitment process,” it said in a statement. “In addition, Friends of UNILV did not finalize or agree to any NIL offers while he was part of the team, other than a completed community engagement event over the summer.”

UNLV star quarterback leaves program after allegedly “not keeping certain assurances”

“At Blueprint Sports and Friends of UNILV, we take our obligations very seriously. We want to emphasize that we have honored all contracts with Friends of UNILV this season and have not violated any agreements with Mr. Sluka. Our commitment to supporting rebellious student-athletes remains unwavering and we are committed to maintaining the integrity of our programs.”

UNLV also issued a statement on the matter, saying that Sluka had made “financial demands” that they believed violated NCAA rules.

“The representative of football player Matthew Sluka made financial demands on the university and its NIL collective so that he could continue playing,” the school said. “UNLV Athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA’s pay-for-play rules as well as Nevada state law. UNLV does not engage in such activities nor respond to implied threats. UNLV has honored all previously agreed-upon scholarships for Matthew Sluka.

“UNLV has fulfilled its duty of care and will continue to operate its programs within the rules and regulations of the NCAA and the laws of the State of Nevada.”

Sluka’s announcement went on to say that he had joined the rebels “based on certain assurances that were made to me, which, however, were not confirmed after my enlistment.”

“Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments cannot be met in the future.”

For the first time since 1984, the Rebels started 3-0, and Sluka passed for 318 yards with six touchdowns and ran for 253 yards with a scoring drive to the finish.

While he looks for his next opportunity, the Rebels will likely rely on Hajj-Malik Williams or Cameron Friel for the remainder of the season.
