Under Sebastian Hoeneß, Enzo Millot has been flourishing for a year and a half and is making a crucial contribution to VfB Stuttgart’s success. Things didn’t always go so smoothly for the 22-year-olds at Cannstatt – the offensive player had a very difficult time under former coach Bruno Labbadia.

One goal and two more assists: Enzo Millot swept the spectators off their feet in the 5-1 win against Borussia Dortmund. Above all, the assist for the 4-1 made the MHP Arena tremble. At the goal line, Millot started dribbling and circled around two Borussia players. In front of Kobel, the Frenchman kept track of things and laid it off for El Bilal Touré. He just had to push the ball into the goal from five meters.

An outstanding individual performance from Millot that is reminiscent of Jamal Musiala. Last week in the game against Holstein Kiel we used a similar dribble and put the ball in the middle. This also resulted in a goal.

Statistics from the data service provider also show that Millot experienced a rocket launch this season opta: He has won all 13 of his dribbling attempts so far – no other player from Europe’s top 5 leagues has dribbled so many times this season without losing one.

Hoeneß: “He did great things today”

Sebastian Hoeneß raved highly about the wing dribbler in the press conference after the sweeping win on Saturday evening: “He did great things today. We all know what he’s capable of. He’s having a really good season so far.”

Millot’s performance against BVB was “on a completely different level,” the VfB coach added. And: “He is blessed with exceptional qualities, but he is not just good at football.” Hoeneß also highlighted his running performance and willingness to take on duels.

These words show the standing of Millot, who is placed under Hoeneß and was only not in the starting eleven once in the current Bundesliga season. It wasn’t always so easy for him at VfB Stuttgart.

Under former coach Bruno Labbadia, Millot was more of a supplementary player. The coach, who sat on the VfB bench from December 2022 to April 2023, even publicly criticized the 22-year-old before the DFB Cup round of 16 against Paderborn: “The training performance at the moment doesn’t match what we need.”

Millot: From being rejected to being a top performer

Words that are surprising when you look at the numbers under Hoeneß. With the change of coach from Labbadia to Hoeneß, things went up steeply for both Stuttgart and Millot.

Last season, the winger played 35 times for Cannstatt, contributing six goals and eleven assists. The trend continued seamlessly in the current season: the 22-year-old scored three times and provided two assists across all competitions.

Enzo Millot proved in July and August that he can also perform on the big stage when he won the silver medal with the French Olympic team and took the lead in the 3-5 final defeat against Spain.
