UCL | Shakhtar 0-3 Atalanta: Dominant Dea shows the style

Atalanta absolutely dominated Shakhtar Donetsk with a comfortable 3-0 win and could have scored far more goals than Berat Djimsiti, Ademola Lookman and Raoul Bellanova.

Both teams began their European campaign with a 0-0 draw, La Dea at home to Arsenal and the Ukrainians away to Bologna, albeit with an early penalty saved by Georgiy Sudakov. The number of injuries to Gian Piero Gasperini, who alongside Matteo Ruggeri and Marco Brescianini also lost Isak Hien, Rafael Toloi, Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca, continued to increase. Surprisingly, Charles De Ketelaere was used as a false 9. Shakhtar were missing Danylo Sikan and Tymur Puznakov and played on a neutral pitch in Gelsenkirchen.

See how it developed in the live blog.

Ademola Lookman fired an angled shot across goal and also set up the opening goal, his cross went past Ederson, but Berat Djimsiti managed a chest and volley shot from four meters from the outside of the boot. It was the defender’s first Champions League goal.

Lazar Samardzic came close to making it 2-0, first firing over the goal and then deflecting the shot just inches wide after weaving through two tackles.

De Ketelaere also shot wide at the end of a successful move, but Lookman was unlucky when his hot volley hit the crossbar in the 36th minute.

A header from De Ketelaere from six meters went straight at the goalkeeper, but the second goal was a beautiful move, including Lookman’s backheel shot, which Samardzic distributed down the left for Sead Kolasinac and Lookman’s finish into the goalkeeper’s bottom corner swept inside of right boot. This was also the Nigerian international’s first Champions League goal.

Djimsiti had to leave the pitch at half-time with a hip injury, so Marten de Roon moved into the back three.

Yukhym Konoplia came off the bench and immediately fired narrowly wide to take Shakhtar’s best chance of the game, but Atalanta had their fourth chance soon after.

Davide Zappacosta shot the ball to the back post, where he headed over fellow full-back Raoul Bellanova – his first goal for the club.

Moments later, Zappacosta almost scored the fourth goal, his shot hitting the near post and Samardzic damaging the goalkeeper’s gloves.

Nicolò Zaniolo shot over the ball from distance, but there was another strike that left Kossounou limping away, compounding the lack of defenders.

This result means Atalanta have four points and a goal difference of +3 after two games.
