Ever since Tyla walked into the 2024 Met Gala in a dress made of sand, we’ve had high expectations of her red carpet appearances 📈. And she delivered at the 2024 MTV VMAs, wearing a yellow minidress made of stripes that flowed into a train and paired it with a turquoise necklace.

Tyla is nominated for a number of awards at this year’s VMAs, including Best New Artist (alongside Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey and Teddy Swims), Best R&B for “Water” and Best Afrobeats, also for “Water.”
Tyla actually told Cosmopolitan the story behind “Water” and said she never expected it to be so big. “I recorded it in a bedroom,” she said. “I never thought This song is going to hit home. And then I started performing it and saw everyone singing along to every word. And I knew it was something bigger than we thought. People from all over hear it and dance to it, no matter how old they are. There are babies, there are old people. I just love that it’s an African sound that is so universal.”
