Two-sport athlete Walker Slay will transfer to Chapman University with school-leading times (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is a proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment updates. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that they pursue with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them along the way.

Walker killing from Kailua, Hawaii, is attending Chapman University this fall. Slay, a graduate of Le Jardin Academy, swam for the Aulea Swim Club throughout his age group career. Slay also played water polo during high school and plans to continue playing a dual sport during college.

I look forward to continuing my academic and athletic career at Chapman University. Thank you to my parents, coaches and mentors for helping me through this process. Go Panthers!

In February, Slay set new personal bests in both of his main events, the 200m freestyle and 500m freestyle, at the Mark Takai State Championships. He swam a time of 1:46.41 in the preliminary heats of the 200m freestyle before taking 7th place in the finals with a time of 1:46.80. He took 3rd place in the 500m freestyle with a time of 4:48.21.

Just 2 weeks later at the 2024 Hawai’i State Championships, Slay set 3 personal bests in the 100 freestyle (49.32), 100 backstroke (55.50), and 1000 freestyle (10:07.16). In the 1000 freestyle, Slay placed 3rd, beating his previous best time of 10:11.45 by over 4 seconds. He also swam the 200 freestyle (1:46.86), finishing 10th, and the 200 backstroke (1:59.30), also finishing 10th. Slay also participated in Auela’s relays, posting a time of 48.81 in the 400 freestyle relay and a time of 26.58 to finish first in the 200 medley relay.

Best times:

  • 100 free – 49.32
  • 200 m freestyle – 1:46.41
  • 500 m freestyle – 4:48.21
  • 1000 freestyle – 10:07.16
  • 1650 Freestyle – 16:56.63

Chapman University, a Division III program, is located in Orange, California and is a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The Panthers are led by Juliet Suess, who is entering her third season with the team. At the 2024 SCIAC Championships, Chapman finished in 3rd place, her best finish in program history.

To make the finals at the 2024 SCIAC Championships, he needed times of 1:44.74/4:44.81 in the 200/500 freestyle. However, Slay’s 1650 freestyle would have placed him 11th, better than any other Chapman swimmer. This year, freshman Trenten Calloway led the Panthers’ middle-distance group, posting a best of 4:34.49 in the 500 freestyle. Slay will definitely be a key addition for Champan, as his 500 freestyle would have placed him 2nd, while his 1650 freestyle would have placed him 1st.

Joining Slay at Chapman’s 2028 are Ethan Miller (fly), Bennet Russo (backstroke/freestyle) and Ryan Musich (freestyle/IM).
