Two Westchester high schools are among 21 New York City schools that will receive National Blue Ribbon Schools designation for 2024, the U.S. Department of Education announced Monday.

Blind Brook High School and Scarsdale High School earned the blue ribbon, an award that many schools strive for and, when they receive it, make them big.

The blue ribbon, which is awarded nationwide, is intended to be awarded to schools for their academic performance or for eliminating performance gaps in student groups.

“The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools raise the bar for our nation’s students and serve as a model for effective instruction and purposeful collaboration in their schools and communities,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

Schools are nominated by state education agencies across the country. Nominated schools submit applications that cover “school culture, programs, assessments, instructional practices, professional development, leadership, family and community involvement,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.

Of the 21 New York schools receiving the Blue Ribbon this year, 15 are in New York City.

Last year, six schools in the Lower Hudson Valley received this award: Briarcliff Middle School, Briarcliff Manor; Bronxville High School, Bronxville; Colonial Elementary School, Pelham; Greenacres Elementary School, Scarsdale; Haldane High School, Cold Spring; and PEARLS Hawthorne School, Yonkers.
