Two railroad projects in New Orleans nearing completion

The NOPB The industrial transshipment park on Jourdan Road in east New Orleans will serve as a location for carriers to transport freight between truck and rail to the heartland of the USA. The property, owned by the Port of New Orleanswill open shipping options and new markets.

Earlier this year, the NOPB Board of Directors awarded a $2.2 million contract to Bicycle manufacturing company for the construction of the transshipment point.

Since the groundbreaking in April, construction has progressed and is now over 85 percent complete. The entire project is expected to be completed in August and will have the capacity to handle up to 21 rail cars.

The total cost is USD 3 million and is covered by a USD 1.5 million grant from the Louisiana Department of Transportation And Development Shortline Railroad Priority Program and a $1.5 million funding injection from NOPB.

The Department of Transportation awarded NOPB $7.29 million in 2020 as part of the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement Grant to help fund additional rail yard space and the implementation of automated switch technology.

The final phase is the expansion of the Claiborne station near St. Claude, which will add four additional sidings and additional infrastructure for more efficient train operations and transshipment for new or existing customers. This expansion will also be completed by the end of August.
