Police believe alcohol may have played a role in the accident early Saturday morning near the Mercier Bridge, in which two people were in critical condition.
Emergency services were notified by 911 at around 3 a.m. on Saturday of a serious accident that had occurred shortly before on an on-ramp to the bridge.
The vehicle was traveling on Airlie Street when, for unknown reasons, it struck a low concrete wall on an access ramp to the bridge in the LaSalle neighborhood.
“When police arrived at the scene of the accident, the vehicle’s airbags deployed. On board were the driver, a 37-year-old man, and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman,” said Montreal police spokeswoman Véronique Dubuc.
Both were taken to hospital, where authorities fear for their lives. The woman suffered serious head injuries.
To protect the scene of the accident, a security area was set up where police investigators attempted to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
“Currently there is suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol,” said Dubuc.
The investigation is ongoing.
