Two Hartselle firefighters hospitalized after fire truck hits house and tree

HARTSELLE, Alabama (WHNT) – The city of Hartselle said two firefighters were hospitalized after a fire truck struck a home Wednesday afternoon.

In a social media post, the city said the driver of fire truck No. 2 suffered a medical emergency while returning from a firefighting call on Wednesday and lost control of the vehicle near the Dollar General on Highway 36 West. The Hartselle Police Department (HPD) said the emergency caused the driver to become unconscious.

The city said the lieutenant in the passenger seat was able to grab the steering wheel and maneuver the truck out of oncoming traffic. However, officials said the firefighter was unable to regain control of the vehicle and it veered off the roadway heading west. The truck then struck the corner of an unoccupied home and continued on before crashing into a large pine tree.

The city said both firefighters were transported in the vehicle for medical care. The lieutenant suffered a cut to his hand and required stitches. City officials said the firefighter who suffered the medical incident is expected to recover but is currently being evaluated.

HPD said the cause of the medical incident is currently unknown, but it is possible that it was heat-related.

The city said it was very grateful that both firefighters were not seriously injured.
