Heading into the 2024-25 season, one of the biggest questions facing the Detroit Pistons is their backcourt. At this early stage of their careers, many are wondering if Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey can work together long-term.
Ivey had a promising rookie season in 2023, but Cunningham was sidelined for most of the season due to injury. He posted similar numbers in year two but alternated between the starting lineup and the second unit. In 77 games, the former No. 5 pick averaged 15.4 PPG and 3.8 APG.
Cunningham is coming off the best year of his young career, bouncing back from an injury-plagued season to average 22.7 PPG and 7.5 APG.
At this point in the offseason, players are preparing for training camp in late September. Cunningham and Ivey already appear to be working out, and together. The two were recently spotted working out together at the Pistons’ facility.
Many critics claim that the two will not be able to reach their full potential together, but one key member of the organization sees things differently. At his introductory press conference earlier this summer, new head coach JB Bickerstaff expressed high hopes for the duo of Cunningham and Ivey.
As the Pistons try to juggle their two top guards, they have brought in a good coach to do the job. Bickerstaff has experience with this kind of situation from his time in Cleveland. Many had similar feelings about Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, but he was able to get the best out of both All-Stars.
After a summer of changes, the Pistons are ready to take a step forward next season. In addition to numerous improvements, the young core also seems ready to do its part in changing the trajectory of the franchise.
