Two young men died in the Bronx early Sunday morning when they crashed their motorcycle into a tree, apparently at too high a speed.
According to police, the two men, one of whom was 21 years old and the other apparently in his 20s, were riding a Yamaha motorcycle at the corner of Commerce and Newbold Avenues in Unionport around 12:45 a.m. Sunday when they apparently crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of their names has been released.
The accident is eerily similar to one that occurred at the exact same intersection in September 2015. In that incident, a man was riding a Suzuki motorcycle with a female passenger, traveling well over the speed limit when he failed to negotiate a sharp turn and crashed into a chain-link fence. The driver was listed in critical condition, while his female passenger was pronounced dead.
According to the city’s Department of Transportation, 149 people have died in traffic accidents on New York City’s streets through August 8 this year, a four-year low for this time of year.
This year, 44 people have died on two-wheelers, the vast majority of them on motorized two-wheelers. These include 15 on motorcycles, 12 on mopeds and 11 on e-bikes.
