Truth Social value drops to near record low after Trump chat with Elon Musk

Donald Trump’s return to X for his highly anticipated conversation with Elon Musk on Monday did nothing to boost the value of the former president’s social media company.

Shares of Trump Media & Technology Group, Truth Social’s parent company, fell 3% to $24.07 on Tuesday morning, above their all-time low of $22.50 since its IPO in late March.

The decline followed a 5% drop ahead of Trump’s return to the platform formerly known as Twitter, which he used to successfully run for the Republican nomination and the White House in 2016.

Trump Media’s share price peaked at $66 shortly after its IPO, but has been in free fall in recent weeks.

Last week, TMTG released its second-quarter results, which showed that the company suffered a net loss of $16.4 million while generating revenue of $837,000.

Truth Social was launched after Trump’s X-account @realDonaldTrump was suspended following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Last month, Truth Social saw its user base grow to 16 million visitors, a 92% increase from the previous month, according to web analytics website Similar Web.

According to the data, Musk-owned X has more than 200 million daily users.

Trump’s return to X for the two-hour friendly chat with the mogul was hampered by technical problems that delayed the start of the 8 p.m. event by more than 40 minutes.

Musk, who supports Trump, attributed the difficulties to a distributed denial-of-service attack, which involves flooding a server or network with traffic in an attempt to bring it to a standstill. His claim could not be verified, however.

The interview was followed by a series of posts from Trump to X. It is only the second time he has used the platform since his account was restored last year.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), TMTG said Trump was “fundamentally required to post all social media posts to Truth Social and not to post the same post on any other social media site for six hours.”

Musk, who supports Trump, created an outside super PAC fundraising group to support his campaign.
