Trump’s Wisconsin event is moved indoors due to concerns about security

WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump’s campaign changed plans for an outdoor event in Prairie du Chien on Saturday, moving the appearance indoors after staffing shortages at the Secret Service, officials confirmed.

Trump is scheduled to speak at the Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center on Saturday afternoon. However, the campaign had originally planned to hold the event outdoors before the Secret Service raised concerns about its ability to secure the event due to staffing shortages, according to a senior official briefed on the planning who was not authorized to speak publicly .

“The agency was never designed to provide such a high level of protection to a growing number of protected individuals,” the intelligence official told the Journal Sentinel. “Our personnel and equipment are being pushed to the limit to maintain the current operational tempo.”

The official noted that the visit to Wisconsin came at the same time as world leaders gathered in New York for the United Nations General Assembly summit. The agency is responsible for securing the event.

A spokesman for the Trump campaign in Wisconsin did not respond to questions early Friday. CBS previously reported the change in plans.

The move comes as the former president has faced increasing threats in recent months. He was injured in an assassination attempt at an outdoor rally in Pennsylvania in July, and Secret Service agents prevented a second apparent attempt on Trump’s life at his Florida golf course this month.

In recent days, intelligence officials and lawmakers have warned of threats against Trump and current and former administration officials from Iran.

Congress approved about $231 million in additional funding for the Secret Service earlier this week as part of a short-term emergency funding measure to avert a government shutdown.

After the Trump assassination attempts, the agency came under intense scrutiny, including from Wisconsin lawmakers. In particular, Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson was critical of the agency’s investigation into the July 13 Trump assassination, saying the Secret Service had not been transparent with lawmakers.

Trump is expected to focus on immigration and crime while in western Wisconsin.
