The pickup truck drifted several meters from the shore after the driver apparently got out and forgot to put the vehicle in park.
A truck parked on a boat ramp in West Newbury rolled into the Merrimack River on Sunday evening, police said.
At 10:39 p.m., West Newbury police and fire departments were dispatched to the boat ramp at the corner of Church and Bridge Streets to respond to a report that a truck had entered the water, according to a statement from West Newbury police.
The driver was not in the vehicle at the time, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the truck driver forgot to put the vehicle into parking position at the boat ramp, the statement said.
The truck fell into the water and drifted several meters off the coast.
The West Newbury Police and Fire Departments were assisted by the Merrimac Police Department, the West Newbury Harbormaster Department, the Haverhill Harbormaster Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Beverly Dive Team, according to the agency.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
