Truck crashes into building in downtown Winnsboro

WINNSBORO – Just before noon on Tuesday, August 13, a pickup truck crashed into the facade of a building at 116 S. Congress Street in downtown Winnsboro.

Patrick Clemens, director of the Winnsboro Department of Public Safety, said the truck was stopped at the First Citizens Bank drive-thru when the driver got out to get to the ATM.

“It got stuck because the door wouldn’t open all the way,” Clemens said. “The driver then reached into the truck to pull himself back in and accidentally pushed the gear lever, putting it in gear.”

According to Clemens, the truck then continued driving, first hitting the driver, then crossing four-lane South Congress Street and crashing into the front of the Insurance of Fairfield building.

The building, which houses Homes 4 Sale, LLC and Nelco & Assoc., was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The driver of the truck was transported to a medical facility by Fairfield County EMS, but no information is available on the extent of his injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The accident is being investigated by the WDPS.
