Trees fell across the Midlands as Helene’s strong winds hit SC

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Helene brought strong winds and rain to South Carolina, causing trees to fall across the Midlands.

Several viewers and other sources submitted photos and videos of fallen trees Friday morning.

Fairfield County

Kershaw County

Several downed trees were also reported in Kershaw County Friday morning:

  • Springdale at Walmart in Camden
  • Highway 1 at Elliott Hunter Road in Cassatt
  • Black River at the Cleveland School in Camden
  • Canteen on Charlotte Thompson School Road in Camden
  • 1435 Chestnut Road in Elgin
  • 7 Frasier Fir Lane in Elgin
  • 1678 Smyrna Road in Elgin
  • 88 Tombfield Road in Rembert
  • White Pond at Gary Goff in Elgin
  • Barfield Road near Spitzer in Elgin
  • 1007 Cherry Lane in Elgin
  • Lockhart Road near Roberts in Bethune

Lee County

Lexington County

WIS News 10’s Naomi Popa surveyed the storm’s impact in Lexington County Friday morning and found a tree had fallen into the bedroom window of a home on Sterling Creek Court.

The homeowners were awakened when they heard a loud crash and realized a tree had fallen into one of their bedrooms. Naomi Popa confirmed the homeowners are safe.

A Lexington County spokesperson also reported another fallen tree in Lexington County at 1249 Charles Town Road.

The Lexington Police Department (LPD) reported several additional road closures due to fallen trees around 7:25 a.m. Friday morning.

  • 2400 Mineral Springs Rd
  • 5700 Sunset Boulevard/US-378
  • 4801 Sunset Boulevard/VLMHP entrance
  • South Church Street at Roberts Street
  • Satcher Road at Pond View Lane
  • Several streets in Golden Hills

Richland County

A viewer named Margie submitted video of a fallen tree near a home on Delane Drive in Columbia.

City of Forest Acres officials also reported several streets with downed trees Friday morning:

  • Trenholm near Arcadia
  • Two trees further down Rockbridge
  • Linbrook
  • Gamewell
  • Percival of Overcreek
  • Percival Northshore
  • Trenholm and Churchill
  • Laurel Springs
  • Spring lake
  • Landers Street
  • Crystal Drive
  • Sylvan and Daniel
  • Bethel Church
  • Two trees down in Storkland

The Irmo Fire District also announced that “dozens of trees are blocking roads” and urged residents to shelter in place until the storm passes.

In addition to fallen trees, various road closures were also reported across the Midlands. Many schools and state offices have also announced schedule changes due to the storm.

Thousands of Midlands residents also reported power outages on Friday morning.
