Travis Hunter wears “bland” T-shirt to UCF game after criticism

Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter is like the Shohei Ohtani of baseball as he plays two positions incredibly well. To be clear, I’m not saying he’s the best college football player of all time, including this year. But there’s no denying that what he does on the field is rare and special.

Hunter plays wide receiver and defensive back, and here are his splits every position this year:

  • WR – 37 receptions, 472 yards and five touchdowns
  • DB – 14 tackles, 2 pass break-ups, a forced fumble and an interception

Don’t let the defensive stats fool you, he is an incredible pass coverage player and could probably have a solid NFL career as a DB. But there are some who are not convinced by his abilities as a receiver.

On an episode of “The St. Brown Podcast” earlier this week, former NFL All-Pro cornerback and Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman said he was generally unfazed.

“As a receiver, I just find him a little boring,” Sherman said.

Amon-Ra St. Brown — the host of the podcast and an All-Pro receiver himself — echoed Sherman’s thoughts on Hunter, calling him “solid” on the offensive side of the ball but saying he would have a better chance at being a defender at professional level.

Now I don’t know if boring is the right word considering he can make catches like that in pressure situations.

But highlights like these certainly don’t reflect all the work a recipient puts together. There are route running, blocking and other factors that contribute to the receiver evaluation process. And considering that I’m no expert at identifying standout talent, and that both of these guys know what the hell they’re talking about, I’ll rely on their assessment of Hunter’s offensive abilities.

But Hunter himself apparently doesn’t think he’s as mediocre as Sherman and St. Brown think. As he drove to FBC Mortgage Stadium to prepare for a clash with the UFC Knights, Hunter wore a t-shirt that simply said “Bland” on the front.

Given that everyone in the Colorado program values keeping things personal, that’s not really surprising.
