M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller, Catchcontinues its winning streak at the box office, quietly taking in an estimated $5.5 million this weekend from 5,574 theaters in 67 foreign markets. While the film hasn’t exactly been a box office smash, it has managed to maintain interest in several key international markets. The decline in trailing territories was relatively modest at -44%, with some particularly strong performances in France (-20%), Germany (-30%) and Italy (-36%). These numbers suggest that while Catch It may not break any records, but it finds a receptive audience in certain regions.

The international total for Catch is $27.1 million for a worldwide total of $62.3 million. This slow but steady climb shows that despite mixed reviews and a lukewarm reception, the film is starting to make an impression, especially outside the United States. Catch has yet to open in several key markets, including Korea and Japan, which are scheduled for September 18 and October 25, respectively. These releases could potentially give the film the final push, especially in markets known for their appreciation of Shyamalan’s unique style of storytelling.

Although Shyamalan is a household name, his recent films have struggled to match his earlier successes. Catch seems to be following a similar trend and is nearing the end of his domestic tour with numbers far below those of his biggest hits, such as Sign (60 million dollars on the debut weekend) and The village ($50 million debut).

Actually, Catch is on track to become Shyamalan’s second lowest-grossing film, ahead only of the 1998 comedy and drama Wide awakewho before his breakthrough with The sixth senseHowever, the film is expected to exceed the $35 million Knock on the hutwhich would prevent it from becoming Shyamalan’s lowest-grossing film in over 25 years.
