Transfer news: Premier League clubs spend £800m less ahead of final week of transfer window

Southampton have made the most new signings with 13, while Liverpool have not signed a single player in this transfer window – but Chelsea spent the most money.

Chelsea spent £248 million and £393 million in the summer of 2022 and 2023 respectively and have continued to spend heavily in 2024, spending £204 million so far.

Pedro Neto (£54 million), Joao Felix (£45 million) and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£30 million) were the London club’s three most expensive signings.

The Blues are now trying to get rid of Raheem Sterling, Romelu Lukaku, Trevoh Chalobah and Cesare Casadei to balance the books.

“Given Chelsea’s huge squad, a fire sale is to be expected in the final days of the transfer window,” said MacDonald.

“It will be interesting to see what transfer fees they can demand for players that Enzo Maresca obviously does not see as part of his plans.”

Aston Villa spent the second highest amount (£149 million), the majority of which went to Everton’s Amadou Onana (£50 million) and Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen (£35 million).

Brighton are third on the list at £144 million, ahead of the expected arrivals of Matt O’Riley from Celtic and Ferdi Kadioglu from Fenerbahce, who are expected to cost £60 million between them.

Manchester United have spent £140 million on new signings, including Matthijs de Ligt (£38.6 million) and Noussair Mazraoui (£12.9 million) from Bayern Munich, as well as Leny Yoro (£52 million) from Lille FC and Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna FC (£36.5 million).

Tottenham spend the most on a single player in the Premier League after signing Dominic Solanke for £65m from Bournemouth as part of a £126m summer spend.
