Train your knees, Russell Wilson. We need you next Sunday in Denver

If you go deep, he goes to his knees.

It’s time for Russell Wilson to find a way on the plane to Atlanta. Give him a transfusion of wolverine blood IMMEDIATELY. Therapy is not ruled out, no request denied.

Wilson’s sore calf must be healed by Sunday so he can play against the Broncos at Empower Field in Week 2. Playing without Wilson is like Star Wars without Darth Vader. He’s worth the effort.

It’s questionable whether Wilson will play against the Atlanta Falcons after re-injuring an injury in training camp. His status could be determined during pregame warmups. Normally, caution would be advised. My concern? If Justin Fields replaces Wilson and plays well, the 35-year-old may not get his job back.

That would stink.

Aside from coach Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans in October, no Broncos game is as interesting. Understandably, it’s difficult to ask Broncos Country to support Wilson. He earned $124 million for 11 wins in two seasons and made headlines for eye-rolling things like his office, his birthday party and his four-hour high-knees workout on the plane to London.

Wilson had allies in some Broncos players, others were indifferent or worse. Payton was not a fan and did everything except drive the quarterback’s Uber to the airport to facilitate his exit. The drama would not be staged. There would be resentment on both sides. And fans would revel in the excitement at a loud Mile High. Remember, there’s no guarantee the Broncos will play any important games in December. Can we have one in September?

We need Russell Mania. Move your arms. Lift your knees. Get well soon, Russell.

Main concerns: The NFL has a number of problems — though its ratings make it immune to crises — and the biggest of them is Kansas City. At nationally televised Chiefs games, the average fan sees a biased refereeing decision in favor of the defending champions. On Thursday night, the Ravens became the poster child for illegal formations when tackle Ronnie Stanley was penalized three times in the first half while Chiefs tackle Jawaan Taylor avoided a penalty with a similar formation. The Chiefs are already too good. They don’t need any help from the refereeing show.

Contract delay: Jamal Murray still hasn’t agreed to an extension of his max contract. He’s been hitting jumpers at Ball Arena this week, so it’s too early to say anything’s wrong. But with each day that the Nuggets guard goes without a new contract, it’s fair to worry about his short- and long-term future.

Breath in the air: The Rockies remain on pace for 102 losses. They rank second in MLB with 1,393 strikeouts. And they make up for the lack of contact with a lack of speed (75 stolen bases). It would be ridiculous not to make changes, regardless of how much they like their young core of players.
