Get ready for a magical mystery tour as Minecraft is becoming a live-action film. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have teamed up for A Minecraft Movie, which will hit theaters on April 4, 2025.
Directed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, the video game adaptation puts Jason Momoa and Jack Black in a blocky world where, as the official synopsis states, “creativity not only helps you create, but is essential to your survival.” The film also stars Emma Myers (Wednesday), Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker), Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge.
The film follows a group of misfits – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks) – who travel through a portal to the Overworld, the omnipresent cubic Minecraft fantasy realm where creativity and imagination flourish.
With the help of skilled craftsman Steve (Black), the crew embarks on a magical adventure that helps them rediscover the character traits that make each of them unique and gives them the skills they need to cope at home.
The video game Minecraft was first released in 2011. Thanks to its unique world-building and immersive gameplay, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling video game of all time. It has spawned a number of successful spin-offs and Microsoft, which acquired the game developer Mojang Studios in 2014, is producing the film.|
