Tornado warning in effect for northeast Florida and southeast Georgia until 6 a.m. as Hurricane Helene strengthens

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A tornado warning is in effect until 6 a.m. for all counties in northeast Florida and southeast Georgia as Hurricane Helene continues to strengthen and is expected to bring weak winds favorable for tornadoes.

According to the NWS, the threat of multiple tornadoes will gradually increase throughout Thursday. Isolated wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour are possible.

People in tornado watch areas should remain on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and pay attention to subsequent reports and/or possible warnings.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for all counties. This means that tropical storm conditions (sustained winds of 60 to 120 km/h) are expected somewhere in the warning area within the next 36 hours.

Flash flooding remains possible due to heavy rainfall. Dangerous conditions continue along the Atlantic coast.

Helene is forecast to make landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida on Thursday evening as a major hurricane. After landfall, Helene is expected to turn northwest and slow over the Tennessee Valley on Friday and Saturday, according to the NWS.
