I’ll bet that 99 percent of the people reading this have a cell phone within reach right now. Considering we all use cell phones for pretty much everything these days, from directions to restaurant recommendations, why not use your phone to improve your golf swing, too?
But I’m not talking about filming your swing or using it to record your stats, because GOLF Top 100 instructor Ed Oldham says you can accomplish a lot more with your mobile phone in your golf swing – you just need to know how to use it in more versatile ways.
As you’ll see below, Oldham explains exactly how to do it!
How a mobile phone can fix common golf swing mistakes
“We all have cell phones, so when you’re not scrolling through Instagram or texting, try using your phone to improve your golf swing,” Oldham tells me.
Although it may feel strange to try it without a club and golf ball, Oldham explains how to correct your slice using a mobile phone.
“If you slice the ball, the clubface is probably open,” he says. “So I want you to hold your phone in your right hand, do a backswing and pretend you’re taking a picture of someone standing behind you. When you feel that movement, you can extend your right wrist and straighten the clubface.”
Oldham then describes the feeling you should have on the downswing to correct your swing path at impact.

“Hold your phone in your left hand on the downswing, stop halfway and pretend you’re taking a selfie,” he adds. “This will help you develop a sense of flex in the front wrist, which will also help you improve your clubface control.”
Finally, Oldham says you can also easily control the ball flight with your mobile phone.
“Want to hit a higher trajectory shot near the green? Imagine your phone resting on the clubface and you can not “Drop it,” explains Oldham. “This feeling will help you maintain loft at impact, allowing for a higher trajectory shot with a softer landing angle.”
While there are plenty of ways to fix some common swing errors on the driving range, if you follow Oldham’s advice, you can work on your golf game from anywhere thanks to the versatility of your mobile phone. Who would have thought?
