Tonight on TV: An evening of blaring pop hits at the Proms with Sam Smith | TV & Radio

Sam Smith at the Proms

20:25, BBC Two

The Proms continue to open their doors to leading lights in modern pop, this time inviting Sam Smith to perform orchestral arrangements of highlights from their back catalogue. Joined by conductor Simon Hale and the 16-strong choir the LJ Singers, Smith will sing hits such as ‘I’m Not the Only One’ and ‘Stay With Me’. There will also be some carefully selected covers, including Joni Mitchell’s classic ‘Both Sides, Now’. Phil Harrison

The hit list

18:20, BBC One

Who will win £10,000 simply by identifying songs and artists? Rochelle and Marvin Humes continue to slog through music snippets, with highlights coming from an Oasis-loving contestant whose attempt to pay homage to the band earned him a poorly typed “Live Forever” tattoo. “I showed it to my dad. He was like, ‘Who’s Clive?'”Alex Duggins

Lisbon with Michael Portillo

19:30, Channel 5

Orange chinos and pastel linen jackets – that’s what it looks like when conservative travel journalist Michael Portillo spends a weekend in the Portuguese capital. He enjoys the products from the Campo de Ourique food market, designs a tile in a ceramics factory and – probably not for the first time in his life – takes the helm of a luxury yacht. PH

Film selection

The Promised Land, 9pm, BBC Four

The Danish title Bastarden (The Bastard) gives a sense of the class conflict inherent in this bitter, fact-based historical drama. Mads Mikkelsen plays self-made man Ludwig Kahlen, who hatches a plan to turn the wild moorland of 18th-century Jutland into profitable farmland. Despite the king’s blessing, he faces violent opposition from the vain, sadistic local nobleman Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), who uses his power and wealth to destroy the upstart. Essentially a Western, Kahlen is an archetype in the vein of Gary Cooper and Clint Eastwood: principled and stubborn, but appeased by the Romani orphan Anmai Mus (Melina Hagberg) and Amanda Collins’ runaway servant Ann Barbara. Bob Marley: One Love, Now available, Paramount+
Whether you like Reinaldo Marcus Green’s biopic may depend on whether you care about the titular reggae star’s Rastafarian faith, which is regularly and solemnly expressed throughout the film. But his faith also shaped his politics and his groundbreaking music (of which there is plenty to see). The drama encapsulates these in a two-year period – 1976-78 – during which Marley played two peace concerts, recorded his most famous album, Exodus, and was diagnosed with cancer. Kingsley Ben-Adir delivers a respectful performance as Bob, while Lashana Lynch plays a stoic Rita. SW

Odette, 10:05, BBC Two
Herbert Wilcox’s 1950 war thriller was shot just five years after the events it depicts, and feels like it’s been ripped straight from the headlines. British acting legend Anna Neagle puts on her best French accent as SOE agent and mother of three Odette Sansom, who goes undercover in the South of France under the command of Trevor Howard’s Peter Churchill. She maintains her composure through airdrops, nighttime escapes, arrests and interrogations – even when the slick, slippery German intelligence agent Colonel Henri (Marius Göring) puts her to the test. SW

‘Spellbound’ (1pm), BBC Two
Alfred Hitchcock meets Salvador Dalí in this 1945 thriller about psychoanalyst Constance (Ingrid Bergman) and her amnesiac patient John (Gregory Peck), who may be a murderer. Dalí’s involvement as a designer – in a dream that contains the clue to John’s memory loss and the murder – was cut to about two minutes, but still creates a surreal, unsettling atmosphere unlike any other Hitchcock film. Bergman is as smart and sympathetic as ever, in her first of three films with the director, as the mystery of the man Constance has fallen in love with deepens. SW
