Tom Brady’s debut as presenter receives mixed reviews, but he is happy to have no “wounds”

No matter how Sundays go these days, Tom Brady knows his Monday mornings will be great.

The 47-year-old former NFL quarterback made his commentary debut on Sunday afternoon, helping his new colleague at Fox Sports, Kevin Burkhardt, commentate on the Dallas Cowboys’ 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Brady’s performance was rocky at times, critics and pundits said. He struggled to find words and even burped once in the first quarter. But at other times he showed moments of promise, explaining to viewers what it’s like for a quarterback to face a charging defensive player and spotting completely open receivers that even the quarterbacks had missed – a unique perspective that only the five-time Super Bowl MVP could bring to the decision.

“I’m learning a lot, believe me,” Brady laughed late in the game when Burkhardt joked that he had predicted a low-scoring game before the Cowboys swept the Browns.

“Well, Tom Brady is wrong sometimes,” Burkhardt joked. “How about this?”

As the game neared its end, Burkhardt told Brady that he and his colleagues were “thrilled” to have the retired quarterback in the locker room this season. “We’re all in,” he told Brady, asking the seven-time Super Bowl champion how it felt to have the first game behind him.

“I’ve used my arm and my body for so many years, and now I get to walk into a stadium and use my voice,” Brady told him. “Maybe I’ll go out there tomorrow morning and throw a few passes just to remind myself what it feels like. But like Michael Strahan told me before the game, ‘You’re going to wake up Monday morning and you’re not going to be in pain,’ and I’m very happy about that.”

On the Internet, Brady was both booed and cheered during his debut.

“I don’t want to overreact to Week 1, but Tom Brady is the worst announcer in the NFL,” posted one X-user.

Another user joked, “Tom Brady is to the television world what Michael Jordan is to baseball.”

Others poked fun at a moment when Brady attempted to fist bump Fox rules analyst Mike Pereira, who was in the booth with him and Burkhardt. Pereira apparently didn’t see Brady’s hand and turned away before shoving him back, prompting Brady to smile awkwardly and extend his arm toward Pereira’s back.

“Oh! Don’t let me down!” Brady joked before turning his attention back to the game.

But as Brady once emphasized, “I’m still a newbie here.”

Brady has a “long way to go” this season, says Boston Globe Columnist Chad Finn wrote that he believes the retired NFL star has shown after a few games in the locker room that he will be able to keep up.

“I’ll say it again. Brady will do very well,” Finn wrote.

However, the columnist pointed out that the former quarterback, who is scheduled to commentate on the Super Bowl on Fox at the end of this season, is under a lot of pressure. “Everything Brady is doing on the way there is warming up for it,” he added.
