Toi et moi engagement rings: The trendiest style of the 2020s can come with hidden costs

The trendiest Engagement ring of the decade has the fingers of celebrities like Megan Fox, Ariana Grande and Emily Ratajkowskibut ordinary Australians who propose with a “Toi et moi” engagement ring may be faced with hidden costs.

And surprisingly, the reason is not just because they are paying for a ring with twice as many center stones as traditional solitaire rings.

“This is a big misconception in the field of engagement rings,” says Sydney jeweller Alana Ellis, founder and director of Alana Maria Jewelrysays 9honey.

Toi et moi rings, named after the French phrase for “you and me,” typically feature two large diamonds or a diamond and another gemstone set on a simple band.

“In theory, two stones cost more than one, but there are ways to make a custom Toi et Moi to suit any budget,” says Ellis.

Australians can compromise on the colour or clarity of the stones, work with lab-grown diamonds, or have the ring made from 9ct gold instead of 18ct gold to keep the price of these unique engagement rings down.

The hidden costs become apparent after the proposal, when couples start looking for wedding rings and realize that most affordable rings don’t actually match a Toi et moi engagement ring.

“Your regular wedding rings would not sit flush with a toi et moi setting,” explains Ellis.

“You will probably need to look for custom-made wedding rings or specifically search for a wedding ring that matches your stone combination.”

Most wedding rings are designed to sit flush with classic solitaire engagement rings featuring a single raised center stone.

Because toi et moi rings feature two stones, often different sizes and cuts, finding a matching ring can be difficult and expensive.

Few jewelers currently offer wedding bands specifically designed for Toi et Moi rings, and making a custom ring can be costly.

This is no problem for wealthy celebrities, but Australian couples may balk at the idea of paying extra for a custom-made wedding ring given the cost of living.

In comparison, retailers like Michael Hill and Prouds the Jewelers sell simple wedding bands that sit flush with classic solitaire rings for under $350.

Despite the potential hassle and additional costs associated with custom-making a wedding ring, Ellis doesn’t believe the “toi et moi” engagement ring will lose its relevance anytime soon.

“I think the ‘Toi et moi’ style will become a classic. It feels good in the hand and is a refreshing take on trilogies and solitaires,” she says.

“People are experimenting more with colors and shapes and moving away from the traditional engagement ring.”

When Alana Maria launched her first engagement ring collection, Lolaa Toi et Moi ring with a marquise-cut diamond and a pear-cut diamond was by far the most popular style.

The retail price is between $6,500 and $10,500 and it is the brand’s most expensive engagement ring.

Although Ellis believes customers are attracted to the modern, trendy look of Toi et moi engagement rings, their origins actually date back to the 18th century.

In 1796, Napoleon Bonaparte proposed to Josephine de Beauharnais with a gold “Toi et moi” ring, in which a diamond and a sapphire – both pear-cut – were set next to each other.

Jackie Kennedy also wore a ring by French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels that featured a huge diamond and an emerald in the center of a ring covered with emeralds and baguette-cut diamonds.
