What a beautiful fall weekend it is, even if it is a bit smoky in my area. Lightning struck near the town, starting a wildfire that the Forest Service allowed to burn. Essentially, it is an unplanned, controlled burn. The problem with so many forests is that we have been putting out fires for so long, which has led to overgrowth. Not just trees that are too close together, but also too much flora in general. Too much fuel in dense forests leads to massive wildfires. In a more natural forest area, there will be fires from time to time, clearing the undergrowth and nourishing the soil. Now we are conducting controlled burns to recreate a natural state and bring the forest back to a more natural balance. But smoke is smoke.
