WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – Meteorologist Jake Dunne says the day will start off calm and (mostly) storm-free for the first time this week. Later in the day, however, heat will be the biggest weather concern, with high temperatures in the 35-40s feeling like 38 degrees when you factor in the humidity.
After 5 p.m., areas along and east of the Kansas Turnpike will see one or two storms. However, most areas will remain dry, and while light hail and damaging wind gusts cannot be ruled out, widespread severe weather is unlikely.
Friday will be another unusually hot afternoon, with highs in the 35s, ten to fifteen degrees above average, and a heat index near 100 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are possible, if not likely, after 5 p.m., and some could be heavy.
A much stronger storm system will bring widespread showers and storms to the state this weekend. The best chances will be in northern and western Kansas on Saturday, followed by higher chances in southern and eastern Kansas on Sunday. Although heavy, piercing rain is possible, if not likely, no severe weather is expected this weekend.
After temperatures reached over 30 degrees on Saturday and over 27 degrees on Sunday, it is expected to be significantly cooler at the beginning of next week, with highs of around 21 degrees and night temperatures between 4 and 10 degrees.
