Titans coach Brian Callahan does not regret his outburst against QB Will Levis after losing the ball in a loss to the Jets

Although he is not happy that the moment was caught on camera, Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan does not regret his emotional outburst toward Will Levis on Sunday afternoon.

Callahan was seen on television yelling at Levis, “What the hell are you doing?!” after the quarterback dropped the ball just six yards from the end zone in their 24-17 loss to the New York Jets. Callahan was furious when Levis returned to the sideline.

While Callahan did not want Levis to be held responsible for the incident, he stuck to his response.

“I don’t regret my feelings or how I felt in the moment,” Callahan said Monday, via ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “I’m usually pretty calm. This just threw me off balance, and I’m human like everyone else. I have blackouts where I lose my mind.”

Looking at the fumble itself, it’s easy to understand why Callahan was so upset. Levis, who had a chance to put the Titans ahead by two points on a third down at the 6-yard line, attempted a backward shovel pass to running back Tyjae Spears in a slight panic while trying to move through the pocket. Jets linebacker Quincy Williams landed on the fumble and recovered the ball to complete the turnover.

Even if Levis had gone down and taken the sack, the Titans could have come away with three points. Instead, the Jets scored a touchdown and tied the game after Levis threw an interception on the first play of their next drive. Eventually, the Jets pulled away, taking the seven-point victory and putting the Titans at 0-2 on the season.

“He’s an adult and knows better,” Callahan said Sunday. “So it really bothered me that he cost us three points in a game where we probably needed them.”

In addition to those two turnovers, the Titans also had a punt blocked. All three of those things also happened in their opening loss to the Chicago Bears last week, making the Titans the first team since 2002 to have that happen in two consecutive weeks.

Levis, whom the Titans drafted No. 33 out of Kentucky in the 2023 NFL Draft, completed 19 of 28 passes for 192 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the loss. That was better than his first performance of the season, when he threw two interceptions for just 127 yards against the Bears.

Next week, the Titans will host the Green Bay Packers and try to avoid a 3-0 deficit.

“(My decision making has to) become second nature to me,” Levis said, via ESPN. “I’m going to do everything I can to rewire my brain so that I don’t make those (bad) decisions in those situations.”
