Tips and reminders: Tax-free weekend in Texas

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Tax-free weekend in Texas begins August 9th and runs through midnight on August 11th.

Whether you’re shopping for school supplies or office supplies, this weekend can be a great opportunity to stock up.

However, there are some rules and tips you should keep in mind when shopping.

For an item to be tax exempt, it must cost less than $100.

According to the Texas Comptroller’s website, there is a long list of items that can be purchased tax-free.

Tax-exempt items:

  • Book bags
  • calculator
  • Cellophane tape
  • Circle
  • Writing pads
  • colored pencils
  • Erasers
  • Folders – expandable, pocket, plastic and manila folders
  • Glue, paste and paste sticks
  • Highlighter

  • Index card boxes
  • Kits
  • Notepads
  • Lunch boxes
  • Markers (including dry erase markers)
  • Laptops
  • Paper – lined note paper, copy paper, graph paper, tracing paper, manila paper, coloured paper, poster board and craft paper
  • Pencil cases and other school supplies boxes

Ray Perryman of the Perryman Group advises you to not only make sure the items in your shopping cart are valid, but also be careful about your spending choices.

“The most important thing is to take advantage of the opportunity because school is starting again,” Perryman said.

“Most of the school supplies parents need are covered by this. But be careful not to spend money you wouldn’t otherwise spend just to save the eight percent VAT.”
