The New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers are both proud NFL franchises. They have won more Super Bowls than anyone else in the last five decades. But they appear to have started the 2024 season on different paths, and therein lies the biggest potential drama in their Week 4 matchup.

The 49ers, coming off another Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, should still be the NFC favorites this year. After parting ways with Bill Belichick, the Patriots had a rookie head coach (Jerod Mayo), a rookie quarterback (Drake Maye) and low expectations. However, both teams go into Sunday’s game with a record of 1:2.

San Francisco has struggled with injury issues on both sides, which explains back-to-back road losses at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams. Running back Christian McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve before the team’s season-opening win against the New York Jets and there is no indication yet as to when he will return to the field. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and tight end George Kittle also missed last week’s game but returned to practice before Sunday’s game. Your status needs to be monitored.

The Patriots suffered a disheartening 24-3 setback against the New York Jets in Week 3, four days after losing to the Seattle Seahawks in overtime in Week 2. New England gained just 139 yards against the Jets and has the NFL’s least productive offense through three games with veteran Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. This should be a good place for the 49ers to recover at home, but it’s also a chance for New England to meet a battered version of a title contender.
