TIFF’s official selection adds “Saturday Night,” Jacob Elordi’s “On Swift Horses” and more

And more and more films are being shown: 20 films have been announced for the official selection for the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, bringing the number of films to 278.

The most important of these is Jason Reitman’s SNL Original image Saturday night by Sony, which will celebrate its Canadian premiere in the filmmaker’s home country. With this conclusion, this must mean Saturday night goes to Telluride.

You too thought Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years ago, well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On fast horses. Directed by Daniel Minahan, the film is about a woman and her husband who want to start a new, bright life, but it is turned upside down by the arrival of his brother. She begins a secret life, betting on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Also premiering in North America is Francis Ford Coppola’s dystopian American film Big city after its premiere in Cannes earlier this year; Lionsgate has the distribution deal for this film. Luca Guadagnino’s Queer is coming to North America after its premiere in Venice.

Max Minghella has released his sci-fi horror film Sleeve with his The Handmaid’s Tale with Elisabeth Moss, Kaia Gerber and Mary Lynn Rajskub. Short description of the film: “Set in the near future, when society has reached unprecedented heights in its cultural fixation on youth and beauty.” The film celebrates its world premiere at TIFF.

The gala also features the world premiere of Nick Hamm’s William Tell. Hamm’s films Driven And The trip both screened at the Toronto and Venice Film Festivals in 2018 and 2016, respectively, to critical acclaim. In the film, the nations of medieval Europe battle for power, the ruthless Austrian Empire invades neighboring Switzerland, and a peaceful hunter, William Tell, is thrust into the heart of their resistance. Claes Bang plays William Tell. The film also stars Ben Kingsley, Jonathan Pryce, and Emily Beecham.
