Three parents from Rivers hesitate to send their children back to school after threats of violence

When Kellie Smith saw a threat on Snapchat targeting Three Rivers Middle and High Schools, her heart sank.

Smith told News Channel 3 that her brother tagged her in a post alerting her to the threat.

When she saw this, she decided that her children would not go to school the next day.

Shortly thereafter, Three Rivers Community Schools announced that they would close classes on Thursday.

“Before they canceled classes, I knew my kids weren’t going to school today,” said Smith. She has two children in high school, one of whom is also in fourth grade.

Three Rivers Police have identified the person who made the threats.

It turned out that he was a teenager who lives outside the city limits.

They used a fake display name with the headline “Bobby Lashley is back,” a reference to a professional wrestler.

“School is supposed to be a safe place. If it isn’t, it can be traumatic for children,” Smith said.

The teenager’s mother took him to the Saint Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.

After a series of interviews, MPs concluded that the threats were not credible.

“We are grateful that students, teachers and community members reported what they saw so we could investigate and take early action,” said Saint Joseph County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Bingaman.

Three Rivers Community Schools released an update today and classes will reopen tomorrow, Friday, September 13th.

But even though the threat was deemed implausible, Smith still does not want to send her children back to school.

“It was staged; it was staged, it’s out there and it immediately scares you,” she said. “So I’m glad it wasn’t believable, but it was staged nonetheless.”

Smith wants the school to consider improved security measures such as metal detectors and clear backpacks.

The Sheriff’s Department will now investigate the threats.

Once completed, it will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
