Three Lions named to WCC women’s volleyball preseason team; LMU expected to finish third in 2024 season

LOS ANGELES – The WCC has announced its women’s volleyball preseason team, which includes three LMU players: Sam Hastings, Mia SchaeferAnd Sophia Meyers.

Hastings had an impressive finish last season with 100 assists and 358 digs, averaging 3.93 digs per game. She recorded a career-high 26 digs in a game against Saint Mary’s and tallied seven assists against Pepperdine. Her stellar performances, including 14 digs against Boise State and 17 digs against Montana and South Dakota State, earned her WCC Defensive Player of the Week honors on September 18, 2023. Hastings was also named to the 2023 WCC All-Conference First Team.

Schafer finished the 2023 season having played 88 sets in 25 matches, recording four kills, 390 aces, 402 assists and 128 digs. Notably, she recorded 23 assists against Gonzaga and 12 digs against Pepperdine.

Meyers, who is entering her first year as a Lion, had a remarkable 2023 season at Portland State. She set a new single-season program record and ranked 30th in the nation with 0.47 aces per set. Meyers also recorded 17 double-doubles and finished the season with 359 kills on a .203 hitting percentage, 307 digs, 30 total blocks and 48 aces, earning her a spot on the All-Big Sky First Team.

In the WCC Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, LMU was projected to finish third for the 2024 season with 80 points, behind Pepperdine, which topped the poll with 98 points, and San Diego with 87 points.

The Lions begin their 2024 season next weekend in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where they will face the Western Michigan Broncos on Friday at 3 p.m.
