This stunning phone looks like the future of foldable devices

We get a glimpse into the future. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 is a triple-folding smartphone, and while it’s just a concept for now, it offers a tantalizing glimpse into the future of foldable design from manufacturers.

The Phantom Ultimate 2 goes a step further than foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has a single hinge and two panels for a single fold. It has two hinges and three panels. In other words, it can fold three times – and it looks spectacular.

The Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 has a 6.48-inch screen when folded to begin with, but what’s really impressive is that the device is just 11mm thick in this form. Sure, Honor made the Honor Magic V3 foldable phone just over 9mm thick, but the Phantom Ultimate adds another panel and a hinge to its design. A special battery cover that’s just 0.25mm thick also gives the Phantom Ultimate 2 its incredibly thin profile.

Unfold the panels and the phone becomes a 10-inch tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is much larger than the 7-inch or so screens we’re used to seeing on current foldable phones. It actually becomes more of a full-size tablet than a mini one, and Tecno has come up with a clever use of its dual hinge.

Rotate the unfolded phone to portrait orientation, and the bottom panel can be easily folded to prop the device up on a desk. A virtual keyboard appears on the screen, making it a surprisingly cute laptop. Tecno says the hinges are very strong and should survive 300,000 folds while minimizing any crease on the unfolded screen (twice as many hinges means twice as many screen creases, remember).

Tecno has also used some software wizardry so that the icons and UI adapt to the orientation of the phone. For example, the phone can be placed between two people, each of whom can use one side of the screen. This could be useful for collaboration or translation features, just like we’ve seen from Samsung and Google. The rest of the hardware specs aren’t known, but we can see it has three cameras in a raised side panel, similar to the Huawei Mate XS. The potential downside to this camera design is that it might not lie flat on a desk.

The Phantom Ultimate 2 follows the Phantom Ultimate Rollable Phone and both are concept phones. Tecno is not saying when either will go into production, if at all. That does not mean Triple-folding smartphones are not yet fully explored, as Huawei has (intentionally and not) teased its own triple-folding phone, A full announcement is expected to be made this year.
