This is how CCSD’s panic buttons will work in the coming school year

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) – Teachers and staff in the Clark County School District will be able to call for help immediately when school starts again Monday.

District employees will wear panic buttons, which were introduced after a student attacked a teacher at Eldorado High School in 2022, according to police.

“All the employee has to do is press the button a certain number of times. An alarm will alert the person that they need help. And then if you keep pressing it a certain number of times, the school will go into what’s called a ‘hold’ state, which is basically a hard lockdown,” said CCSD Police Lieutenant Bryan Zink.

Zink says all district employees will be required to carry the devices, and a hard lockdown will result in flashing lights and a loud sound in the school.

“As soon as teachers know they have to leave, they have to secure the classroom door. They have to cover the window. And they have to tell the kids, ‘Hey, we have a strict curfew, get on the floor,'” Lt. Zink said.

Lt. Zink says the panic buttons were used 1,750 times last school year. Not only for things like fights or weapons, but the panic buttons can also be used in medical emergencies to quickly bring medical help to a school if needed.

The devices can be activated up to 300 meters from a school if help is needed nearby.
