Have you ever thought about using LEGO bricks to enhance your home improvement hacks and DIYs? How about doing the same with LEGO duplicates? Well, if you haven’t already, you probably should, because right now TikTokers are using a Dollar Tree-inspired version of LEGOs to create clever entryway storage boxes for their keys – and you’re going to want to try it at home ASAP.

In a recent video that has now gone viral, TikTok content creator Kate (@katesi_tik) explained how she makes a Dollar Tree keychain.

First, she went to Dollar Tree and purchased some of the brand’s Make-It Bricks building blocks ($1.25 each), which come in primary and neutral colors and look a lot like basic LEGO bricks. Next, she grabbed a 10-by-10-inch baseplate for the Make-It blocks (also available for $1.25 each). To complete the list of project materials, she grabbed a 4-by-4-inch iridescent photo frame from the brand’s Special Moments collection ($1.25 each).

When Kate got home, she opened the frame and removed the acrylic insert. She then placed the Make-It-Blocks base plate in the frame, replaced the back of the frame, and closed the whole thing up. If you want to try this at home, make sure you have the right tools and safety precautions for the next step (drilling holes in each of the blocks).

It looks like Kate is heating up a sharp-edged tool on her gas stove – it looks like a vinyl removal tool, but you could also use one of these piercing and scoring tools from Dollar Tree. If you don’t have a gas-powered stove, you can also heat up your scoring tool with a candle. The heated tool will help poke a clean hole through the entire base of each individual Make-It-Bricks block, as the high temperature will melt the plastic.

After drilling holes, Kate attached keychains by threading an open jump ring through the hole and closing it with pliers.

As a final step, she attached the keychains to her keys and tested the DIY function by hanging the frames on the wall to make sure they were securely attached. The end result? A colorful storage solution for under $10.

Since Kate first shared her TikTok video, it has garnered over 103,800 likes and 3.8 million views. But not everyone is a fan. Some commenters were quick to express skepticism about the project’s long-term use and whether or not it would remain intact during use.

“I like the idea but I don’t think it can hold the weight of my keys,” commented one user.

“When I’m in a rush I rip the whole thing off the wall to get to my keys 😂😂😂,” said another commenter.

However, many other TikTokers were keen to tackle the DIY project themselves.

“So creative,” commented one viewer. “I think I’ll do this for my grandson’s pacifiers lol because he always loses them.”

“Oh I have too many keys but this gave me a great idea!” wrote another person.

Do you think you will try it?
