Braves Franchise History

1913: Veteran Braves player Art Devlin hits the game-winning hit for Boston in the ninth inning and is rewarded by manager George Stallings by being sent to Rochester and never returning to the Major Leagues.

1950: The Cubs win 7-6 against the Braves, with reliever Dutch Leonard defeating Warren Spahn.

1965: Braves relief pitcher Billy O’Dell is red-carded again when he falls victim to a Cincinnati home run in the ninth inning for the second consecutive game. This time, it’s Tony Perez who does the damage with a three-run home run to defeat the Braves 7-4.

1992: The Expos score five runs, although only three are earned, against Tom Glavine in 4 2/3 innings and win 6-0, ending Glavine’s 13-game winning streak. Chris Nabholz, who had lost his last game against Glavine, wins in 7 1/3 innings. Glavine starts another 13-game winning streak, all against the Expos, and will not lose to Montreal again until June 27, 2000.

1996: The Cubs defeat the Atlanta Braves 3-2, ending Marquis Grissom’s hitting streak at 28 games.

2010: In today’s games, two teams come back from nine points behind. The Rockies trail 10-1 in the third round but beat Atlanta 12-10. In the eighth round, they scored four points against Jonny Venters to take the lead.

2013: In a battle of two leading playoff contenders, Atlanta beat the Cardinals 5-2 as Mike Minor earned his 13th win and Andrelton Simmons homered. Allen Craig had three hits in a losing cause.

2017: The Braves beat the Rockies 5-2, which is notable because it was the first Players Weekend and each team wore special uniforms with nicknames on the back instead of last names.

2019: The Braves narrowly beat the Mets in a close game, winning 2-1. The Mets make it close in the end by scoring both the tying goal and the winning goal, but Mark Melancon keeps his nerve and saves the ball, ensuring that Dallas Keuchel’s strong start was not in vain.

MLB History

1985: Dwight Gooden wins his 14th consecutive game and his 20th of the season, 9-3 against the Padres. Gooden will finish the season 24-4 and, at 20 years and 9 months old, is the youngest pitcher ever to win 20 games. Bob Feller was a month older when he first won 20 games in 1939.

1996: The Yankees dedicate their first new memorial to Mickey Mantle in 47 years in Monument Park in center field at Yankee Stadium. Miller Huggins, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig will also be honored with memorials, while 15 men will be honored on plaques.

1998: Toronto’s Roger Clemens strikes out 18 Royals in a 3-0 win over Kansas City. He becomes the first pitcher ever to record three games with 18 or more strikeouts. Clemens allows only three hits and does not walk a single batter.

2001: Bengie Molina sets a team record with nine consecutive hits. The Angels catcher is the first Anaheim player to have four hits in two consecutive games since Tim Salmon did it in 1994.

2010: Félix Hernández of the Mariners beats the Red Sox in the second game of a doubleheader with nine strikeouts. He becomes the fourth-youngest pitcher to have 1,000 career strikeouts, after Bob Feller, Bert Blyleven and Dwight Gooden. David Ortiz is his 1,000th victim.
