“They were best friends” – Fisk University remembers women who died in alleged drunk driving accident

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Holly Wagner and Natalie White were killed when a suspected drunk driver rammed the car they were in Saturday night.

“This person took our baby away from us,” said Mark White, Natalie’s father.

Fisk University held a vigil Wednesday afternoon for Wagner and White, both of whom graduated from the university in 2021.

Friends, family and classmates gathered at the Fisk Memorial Chapel to mourn, share memories and remember the women.

“She was a ray of sunshine. She was the soul of our house. Always smiling, always happy, always up for a joke,” said Christal White, Natalie’s mother, who remembered her daughter’s spirit.

For 25-year-old Holly and 24-year-old Natalie, the first steps in their lives were still at the very beginning.

“They were best friends, they moved into their apartment together that day and they were so excited to be living together as best friends and roommates,” Christal White said.

“You knew they were best friends and once they bonded, they were inseparable,” said Leah Wagner, Holly’s sister. “When Holly kicked in my door, you knew Natalie was right behind her.”

Although two lives were lost, Cynthia Wagner, Holly’s mother, says she takes comfort in knowing the two were together Saturday night.

“I know she’s in heaven, I know it, and I know Natalie is with her,” Cynthia Wagner said. “She didn’t die alone, they were together and they’re in heaven together, I know it.”

While the police continue their investigation, many questions remain unanswered for the family.

As they search for answers, they think about what they will miss most.

“We ended every conversation with ‘I love you,'” said Mark White.

The day Natalie died was her father’s birthday. He says he spoke to her a few times that day and their last conversation ended like all the conversations before it.

“At least I know that the last thing I said to her was ‘I love you.'”
