What about Phillipa Soo? You like her, don’t you? If you don’t know her name, Soo originated the role of Eliza Hamilton in the Broadway musical Hamilton.

What if we brought all three of these very good-looking people together on a luxury cruise ship? Wait, I’m not finished yet. And then we put them in uniform? Oh, and I sprinkled in a little Don Johnson. You know, for your mother.

No, this is not a Pajiba 10 FYC post. This is a review of the pilot episode of ABC’s new medical drama. Doctor Odyssey. It is The Love Boat with doctors. In the first episode everyone is very sexy, stylish, smart and capable. And Joshua Jackson appears in this outfit:

Jackson is at the peak of his Clooney-like beauty and charm Doctor Odyssey. His character, Dr. Max Bankman, was hired by Don Johnson’s Captain Robert Massey from a life of altruistic and charitable globetrotting to serve as chief medical officer aboard his luxury cruise ship, The Odyssey. When he arrives, nurse Avery Morgan (Soo) and nurse Tristan Silva (Teale) must teach him how to live life on a cruise ship.

Everyone has a chip on their shoulder. The nurses have years of practical experience on the ship and are familiar with all ailments and problems they may face during a cruise. Jackson’s bankman is a highly educated, privileged white man. Historically, this demographic is not particularly good at taking advice from subordinates. But of course they manage, thanks in part to the guests, who right from the start offer some strange reasons for seeking medical help. The pilot features iodine poisoning from eating too many shrimp at the buffet, a broken penis that requires immediate surgery, and a man who fell overboard.

As soon as the three team members realize that they are all very good at their jobs and pat each other on the back, a real “lovefest” ensues, as Bankman explains to the captain over dinner in a tuxedo. And he means that literally, because of course two people who look like Joshua Jackson and Phillipa Soo generate sexy sparks of sex appeal that they then use. But only once (in the first episode). This immediately triggers the Law of Love Triangles, because of course Teale’s Tristan Silva has had a crush on Soo’s Avery Morgan for two years. How will Nurse Morgan ever choose between these two?

Doctor Odyssey is an extravagant soap opera set on the open sea and laced with medical jargon. The pilot is fun, if ridiculous. It’s hard to take the dramatic parts seriously because they have no sense of realism. The ship’s captain even goes so far as to explain that they are there to preserve a certain level of imagination for their passengers, regardless of the circumstances. But he also spoke about us as viewers. It’s a Ryan Murphy show, after all.

Doctor Odyssey promises special guest stars each week, including Shania Twain, Gina Gershon and John Stamos. And while I’m not a fan of medical dramas, I’ll probably watch this one for as long as it lasts for all the reasons mentioned above.
