BOSTON – It’s primary day in Massachusetts. More than 750,000 voters are expected to cast their ballots in various elections across the state.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tuesday’s vote and some key primary day campaigns.

What election is taking place in Massachusetts today?

The Massachusetts primary election will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The offices on the ballot are: U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, State Senator, State Representative, Register of Deeds, Clerk of Court, and in some counties, County Commissioner.

US Senate primaries in Massachusetts

Senator Elizabeth Warren is seeking a third term in the US Senate. She faced no opponent in the Democratic primaries.

Three Republicans are competing for Warren in the general election. They are engineer Robert Antonellis, president of the Quincy City Council Ian Cain and lawyer John Deaton.

Primary elections for the US House of Representatives in Massachusetts

None of the nine Democrats representing Massachusetts in Congress faces a challenge in the primaries.

Republicans are fielding candidates in only two of the races. Robert Burke, James Govatsos and Daniel Kelly are vying to take on Rep. Stephen Lynch of South Boston in the Eighth District. And Dan Sullivan is the only Republican running in the Ninth District against Rep. Bill Keating of Bourne.

Race for the Massachusetts Governor’s Council

In Massachusetts, there are three contested primaries for the office of governor, all on the Democratic side. The governor’s council votes on judicial nominees and other governor appointments and decides on pardons and commutations.

Four people are vying for the Democratic nomination for the currently vacant 2nd District seat in central Massachusetts: Tamisha Civil, Muriel Kramer, Sean Murphy and David Reservitz.

Incumbent Third District Councilwoman Marilyn Petitto Delvaney of Watertown is again being challenged by Mara Dolan of Concord. And in the Fourth District, Christopher Iannella of Boston faces a primary from Stacey Borden of Boston and Ronald Iacobucci of Quincy.

Suffolk County – Chief Clerk of Court

Boston City Councilwoman Erin Murphy and public defender Alliston Cartwright are running to replace Maura Doyle as Suffolk County Supreme Court clerk. Doyle is retiring after 28 years on the bench. The clerk is responsible for the Massachusetts Supreme Court’s individual cases and oversees bar admissions in the state.

Warning about voter registration fraud

Secretary of State Bill Galvin said last week that some voters Receive SMS messages tells them they are not registered to vote and directs them to a link that supposedly fixes problems with their registration. He said scammers could try to steal voters’ personal information and stressed that election officials in Massachusetts would never send text messages about voter registration.
