According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hollywood screenwriter Derek Connolly is writing the script for a live-action adaptation of Sega’s fighting game Eternal Champions.

Connolly’s achievements include the Jurassic World Movies, Kong: Skull Island, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Detective Pikachu and the not yet published Legend of Zelda Film directed by Wes Ball. He is also working on the screenplay for the upcoming Transformers / GI Joe Crossover film.

Sega’s success with its sound The fact that Japan’s video game giant has started releasing Streets of Rage has clearly encouraged the Japanese video game giant, as it has also signed a film deal for Streets of Rage and stated that it is open to bringing more of its intellectual properties to the big screen.

Still, Eternal Champions is a pretty low blow. Released on the Genesis in 1993, when the rivalry between Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat was at its peak, it garnered good reviews and sales, but never spawned a direct sequel. Eternal Champions: Challenge from the dark sidean improved version released on Sega CD appeared in 1995, while the spin-off titles Chicago Syndicate and X-Perts failed to gain traction among the gaming public.

Given that there hasn’t been another installment in the franchise in decades, it’s questionable whether there’s a large enough audience for an Eternal Champions flick – but the concept of bringing together fighters from different points in history is at least a solid foundation for this kind of popcorn spectacle.

The production company is Skydance, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger serving as producers. Rob Ree is executive producer, while Aimee Rivera is supervising on behalf of Skydance. Sega’s Toru Nakahara will also be on board as a producer.
